How to Naturally Boost Antioxidants

It’s clear that regardless of whether or not people understand what ‘rich in antioxidants’ means, it is certainly a logo or a stamp that says ‘Buy me I’m going to help you live forever.’
Phil Lempert)

What Are Antioxidants?

While ‘forever’ is a bit of an exaggeration – it is true that antioxidants can help rid your body of toxins & help you achieve the optimal health & performance necessary to live a VERY long & fruitful life!

Antioxidants are made up of different vitamins including vitamin A, C & E which help to counteract the deterioration of stored food products.

These are compounds that donate electrons & counteract free radicals which break down your cells.  Free radicals build up as a by-product of metabolism but are also acquired through exposure to sun, polluted air or tobacco smoke among other things.

Natural Sources to Boost Your Antioxidant Levels…

In order to boost antioxidants you need to boost your intake of vitamin A, C & E.   Other great sources are selenium, lutein & zeaxanthin.

& good news for fruit lovers!  Fruit is a wonderful source of antioxidant-producing vitamins.  Also, if you’re someone who enjoys juicing, try blending a few of the following fruits together into an anti-oxidant packed glass of deliciousness.

Some foods (& drinks) that help to boost antioxidants include:

  • Green Tea
  • Apples
  • Oranges
  • Bananas
  • Carrots
  • Squash
  • Broccoli
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Leafy Green Vegetables
  • Blueberries,
  • Cranberries
  • Grapes
  • Pomegranates
  • Dark Chocolate (in moderation, of course)
  • Dried Oregano (see quote below)
  • Berries

Note:  Remember that fruits are also high in sugar & best ingested between full meals.

According to Daniel G. Amen, Author of Change Your Brain, Change Your Body Questionnaires: With Scoring Keys,

“Dried oregano has thirty times the brain-healing antioxidant power of raw blueberries, forty-six times more than apples, & fifty-six times as much as strawberries, making it one of the most powerful brain cell protectors on the planet.”

The Bottom Line…

If you are focused on creating optimal health & performance then you should definitely be focused on eliminating as many free radicals from your body…the way to do this – antioxidants.

Start with the natural methods above by adding the different suggested foods & drinks to your diet more often.  If you are still looking for additional boosts you can also determine if a supplement is right for you.
