The Harmful Effects of Aspartame

In an attempt to “have our cake & lose weight too” modern society has come up with one trick after another to try to help sweeten our foods.

We want to feel like we are indulging – but at the same time lower calories & continue to shed unwanted pounds.

Unfortunately, in seeking this ‘magical have-it-all’ miracle we have in turn developed substances that do all of these things, but harm our bodies far worse than a little natural sugar ever could!

Aspartame is now one of the most highly used artificial sweeteners also packing some of the most dangerous side-effects that you may have never even heard about.

What is Aspartame…?

First developed in the mid 1960’s, aspartame is a non-saccharide sweetener that is now being used in more & more foods & beverages.

Aspartame is most often found in low-calorie products as it offers the taste of sweetness without any calories, fats, carbs or added sugars.

Why has Use of Aspartame Increased?

You’d love to eat whatever you want & still lose weight right?

It’s likely that the lure of such a promise is enough to have you steer your grocery cart toward whatever product promises to allow this.

…Knowing that this is on the mind of nearly every consumer, companies have developed everything from soda to candy to ice cream to help give us an ‘indulgent yet guilt-free’ option for diet & weight loss.

Aspartame Was Banned….Twice!

According to aspartame was actually banned by the FDA when it was first discovered & then again later after certain individuals wanted to reinstate the product.

In fact, even when the decision was finally overturned it was done so with a 3-4 vote so it was just barely legalised!

The Harmful Effects of Aspartame…

Aspartame is made up of Aspartic Acid, Aspartate, Glutamate & Phenylalanine.  Together these ingredients essentially kill brain cells & neurons which help to transmit messages throughout the brain.

Also, as the levels of phenylalanine increase in the brain it can eventually reduce the levels of serotonin in the brain – a happiness inducing hormone which then of course leads to depression.

According to aspartame has reportedly caused up to 90 different negative symptoms & side-effects including:

  • Muscle spasms
  • Rashes
  • Seizures
  • Fatigue
  • Breathing Difficulties
  • Slurred Speech
  • Loss of Taste
  • Mental Retardation
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Birth Defects
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Brain Tumors
  • …& more!

& ironically another reported symptom is: weight gain!…Meaning that half the reason you may have wanted to use it in the first place may actually be null & void!

Substitutes for Aspartame…

Rather than going for something that is, by definition artificial, start with natural sweeteners.

Stevia is your best option. Get your hands on a South American option where it has been used for years to sweeten drinks & meals.

Stevia is a sweetener and sugar substitute made from the leaves of the plant species Stevia rebaudiana. More about this another time.

The Sweetest Solutions…

Ultimately, it’s great to find TOTAL substitutions for a sweet treat.  Meaning, its great if you can find other treats altogether that help you feel indulgent, positive & still help you work towards your health & fitness goals.

Keep your eyes open for The ShapeTrainer CookBook which will have a large list of ‘Healthy Desserts’ & how to prepare them.

In the end, the less sweets you consume, the more the body begins to break its ‘sweets-habit’ & the less you will crave sweets.

After approximately 7 days of eating a clean diet your pallet will begin to re-adjust.

You wont crave sweet stuffs as much & it will start to taste like your fruit or even your vegetables – provided they are good quality – have sugar sprinkled over them!

…This is not to say you can’t have the occasional piece of birthday cake, but when you do indulge, go for a natural sugar substitute.

Worst comes to worst have a small amount of real sugar as it turns out it’s far easier to work off a few extra calories than to undo the negative effects listed above that come with an excess of brain-damaging aspartame!
